Volkswagen Karmann Ghia - Corner (Limited Edition)

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia - Corner (Limited Edition)

from $60.00

The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia is an undeniably iconic and classic automobile introduced in the mid 1950’s that achieved legendary status with it’s stylish, voluptuous Italian styling, and solid German construction.

Long noted for its exterior styling, the Karmann Ghia was designed with input from numerous individuals at Carrozzeria Ghia and was strongly influenced by noted American designer, Virgil Exner. American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague included the Type 14 Karmann Ghia in his list of the world's most beautifully designed products.

The first Karmann-Ghia was introduced in Europe in 1955 and arrived in America as a coupe in 1956. The convertible soon followed in 1958. The slick little car was sold through 1974. Sales totaled an impressive 387,975 cars.

This photographic print is limited to 1,974 prints across all reproductions. Why 1974? That’s the final model year for the Karmann Ghia. The Bahia Red one in featured in this photograph is from my personal collection. A last year model where VW deleted the backseat due to changing safety regulations.

I got introduced to the Karmann Ghia in high school. A friend of mine was lucky enough to use it as his daily driver once he got his driver’s license. His was a Regatta Blue cabriolet and it made an impression. I told myself if I ever had the chance to get behind the wheel of one I would seize that opportunity and I did many years later in 2018. I wanted it wearing red to bring some sensual, Italian drama to the mix and when this came up at auction it was a surprisingly compelling purchase.

Though there were many made, most haven’t survived the decades intact. As such, what remains has become collectible. This is a rare, highly original, unrestored example through and through.
