Ferrari 360 - Shield (Limited Edition)
Ferrari 360 - Shield (Limited Edition)
The 360 Modena along with the 550 Maranello ushered Ferrari into the new millennia. The 360 was a radical departure from the Ferrari classicism seen in the outgoing 355 though it did feature some retro details, like the engine compartment intakes in the rear wings that hinted of 250 LM and the Dino, plus the traditional round 2+2 rear light treatment. For me this model set the tone and visual language for a new century and the cars that followed—the 430, 458 and 488.
The interior of the 360 is clad in leather and aluminum—a reference to the aluminum space frame that forms the chassis. That said, I lit this scene to specifically highlight the shifter of the gated, manual transmission. Most exotics car manufactures including Ferrari transitioned away from manual transmissions in the mid 2000’s. This paradigm shift will be felt for generations as future car collectors will continue to have deep convictions over the tranny. Younger buyers may opt for the performance and ease of automated or paddle shifting as it evokes a sense of the gaming and technology experiences they’ve known since childhood. On the other hand, older and younger audiences that appreciate the visceral connection to the machine will always prefer the analog approach of the manual.
This photographic print is limited to 1999 prints across all reproductions to commemorate the launch year of the Ferrari 360 Modena. Originally, I was going to base the edition on the production number of gated, manual transmission 360 Modena’s but this number is contentious. Some believe it to be about ~29% of total US production from 1999-2005 which would be about 1880 examples. This is based on NHTSA production numbers and a guesstimate on the percentage of manuals.
The Rossa Corsa (Racing Red) example pictured includes a manual transmission, Scuderia side Ferrari shields, Daytona seats, modular three-piece wheels and challenge grills.
