BMW Z4 M Coupe (E86) - Front Corner
The BMW Z4 M Coupe is the high performance model of the BMW Z4 coupés/roadsters produced by BMW Motorsport Division. The first generation was based on the BMW Z3 and was produced between 1998 and 2002. The second generation was based on the BMW Z4 and was produced between 2006 and 2008.
The coupe model was introduced to the public first in concept form at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show and then in production form at the 2006 Geneva International Motor Show.
Why is the Z4M a modern classic?
Design. Engine. Rarity. The Z4 M Coupé had a fastback coupé design is arguably the pinnacle example of flame-surfacing—the then standard and somewhat controversial design language stewarded by Chris Bangle. It is powered by the acclaimed S54, naturally-aspirated, in-line 6 engine.
Jared Rosenholtz in an article for CarBuzz stated it succinctly:
“Powered by the same 3.2-liter S54 inline-six engine as the E46 M3, the Z4 M coupe could hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The S54 produced 330 horsepower (just three less than the M3 due to a shorter exhaust) sent to the rear wheels through a new (at the time) six-speed manual; the E46's transmission wouldn't fit the Z4. Aside from the engine, the Z4 M borrowed the M3 CSL's aluminum hubs, cross drilled iron floating rotors brakes and most of the suspension components.
The Z4 M was also given a bespoke Siemens MSS70 engine management system with higher processing power than the M3's unit. The M also ditched the standard Z4's electric power steering for a better feeling hydraulic unit.”
And, then there is rarity. Chances are you will never see one of these vehicles on the road. Only 1815 M Coupes were built for the North American market. To celebrate the relative rarity, this photographic print is limited to an initial edition of 1815.
